Every vehicle and its components are designed to last a certain period of time, under normal conditions of use. However, there are habits that accelerate car wear and tear and considerably increase maintenance costs.
Many practices that threaten the car's longevity are even described in the owner's manual and can lead to the suspension of the warranty. Some may seem harmless at first, but over time they take their toll. Check out seven "sins" that you must avoid at all costs to avoid compromising your budget or taking scares when visiting the mechanic. The tips are from engineer Erwin Franieck, mentor of technology and innovation in advanced engineering at SAE BRASIL.
1 - Overload electrical system
According to Franieck, the installation of electronic accessories not approved by the vehicle manufacturer, without the necessary adaptation of the respective electrical system, is one of the biggest villains when it comes to the integrity of a car. The specialist points out that sound equipment, alarms and other devices can demand more energy than the vehicle design predicts. Some of these accessories remain active even when the car is off, compounding the problem. The most obvious effect is the reduction in battery life, which retains less and less charge and can "stall".
2 - Chip the vehicle
In the search for greater performance, many alter the original programming of the ECU or the engine's electronic central, changing the throttle opening time and other parameters to deliver more power and torque. These modifications can go further and include suppression of the catalyst and installation of turbo or mechanical compressor, for example.
For working in regimes above which it was designed, the engine also has a higher incidence of carbonization, with the accumulation of deposits in ducts and other internal components, he explains. Those who suffer from this are items such as candles and injectors, which present accelerated degradation and cause irregular propellant functioning.
3 - Ignore filter change deadline
Vehicle filters are relatively inexpensive components, but neglect with them can result in great damage.
4 - Use fuel of doubtful origin
In order to save money, it is common to always supply at stations that offer the best prices. Low price is not synonymous with adulteration, but it is worth suspecting when the prices practiced are well below the market average.
5 - Ignore oil expiration date
Changing the engine oil and the respective filter within the mileage stipulated in the manual is a basic guideline to avoid unexpected and possibly high costs.
6 - Always run with the engine cold
The engine must reach a certain temperature for the heat to expand the internal components and thus provide ideal operating and lubrication conditions. Using the car continuously on very short trips, insufficient to reach the correct temperature, accelerates wear and increases fuel consumption.
7 - Leave the car for a long time
Cars are made to run, and if they stay off for a long time, a number of components are damaged. Depending on downtime, the most obvious effects are battery discharge and tire deflection and deformation. However, even more serious problems can arise.
